What is The Terran Ascension?
The Terran Ascension is an expansion for StarCraft: Brood Wars. We'll be adding in several new units to each race, along with a few suprises.
The Terran Ascension story mainly revolves around the situation after Brood War, with the Koprulu Sector in a tranquil ruin. Everything is dreadfully calm,
and the Protoss and Terrans lick their wounds as they look for a new way to fight the Zerg.
The Zerg have overtaken Aiur, leaving the majority of the Protoss helpless. The Terrans find themselves the hapless subjects of an ancient experiment, and the
next step in their evolution begins. The storyline can be found here. Please note that the storyline is going
under some major rewriting at the moment.
What tools are being used?
As of right now (mid-January), we are using StarDraft, StarGraft, ICE, Arsenal 3 (all of which can be found at Camelot Systems), ScriptCreator, Rhino3D, and other software, as well as raw hex editing. We are also using StarEdit and RetroGRP.
StarDraft and Arsenal 3 allow us to edit unit weapons, spells, hitpoints, cost, etc. StarGraft is a simple EXE editor, which lets us create/edit command button groups and unit/technology requirements. ICE is an Iscript.bin editor.
The Iscript controls all unit animations. StarEdit lets you make maps playable in StarCraft, and is found in your StarCraft folder. RetroGRP lets you change how a unit looks by editing it's GRP file. GRP's are mainly animations
of the unit making a 180-degree turn.
Why is this expansion different?
We will be editing StarCraft in ways no one else has before, primarily using only the tools mentioned above. We will also be editing the effects of unit spells, and multiple aspects of the game. A lot of the things we're doing
will not be released until the actual campaign is available for download.
How are you doing all this?
HEX Editing, along with the above-mentioned tools. There's a lot of things you can do with only a few basic tools. =)
Can I get a job on this thing?
If you want to do a unit/hero voice, we will almost always have an opening for you. For all other jobs, the further we are into the project, the less of a chance you have of getting onto our staff. Keep in mind that if you would like to do a unit or heroe voice, we will probably have an opening for you at any time. To try and get a job
with us, you will need to email me with your nickname, ICQ number, email address, and what you can do for us. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Why do I need an ATTV when I have a Dropship?
Under some circumstances, I have thought that a ground transport, especially an armed one like the ATTV, would be more efficient than a Dropship. ATTV's are primarily meant for a short distance of travel, but can go as far as
you want them to go. I say they are meant for short distances only because ground vehicles will sometimes get stuck, stop, and turn around to go a different direction. Your ATTV could die during that time more easily. In bad
or ever-changing terrain, a Dropship would be better, but on some maps, ATTV's are a better alternative.
Can I have some more Stalker info?
The Stalker is sort of a "highlight unit" for the expansion. I say this because it is based off of a previously scrapped Blizzard unit. The Stalker will include a new portrait, new voice and sounds, new GRP, and a new melee
weapon, called Reinforced Titanium Blades. Unit Stats are not yet final, but the Stalker will definately reach it's peak efficiency, like a Zealot, in early-game to mid-game. Images are now available, and sound clips
will be available sometime in the near future.
What changes will be made in this expansion?
We will be editing every possible aspect of our units that we can in The Terran Ascension. This includes GRP's, weapons, stats, sounds, portraits, and possibly more new features for our units if we have the time and
man-power for it. As of right now, it looks like we will be able to add in some extra features to the game. Spells will be edited, AI scripts will be made, some more, miniscule, changes will be made to the game.
What's up with the Zerg Wurm?
The Zerg Wurm will be a product of superior game editing, making for quite an interesting unit. It can move while burrowed, but only attack above ground. I know it sounds like it screams imbalance, but we have it taken care of.
The Wurm (at a minimum) requires StarGraft and Iscript Editing to create. Don't expect to hear much about this unit for a few weeks (besides GRP work), since it has so far taken a lot of (mostly unsuccessful) work. We will get this unit made, though. ;)
I have another question. Where can I ask it?
You can ask a question in one of our scheduled chats, or on our forum, both of which have a link on our menu. If your question isn't answered there, you can email me with
your question, and I'll try and respond as best as I can.
